Decisions, decisions, decisions. People who buy a vehicle always have plenty of decisions to make in regards to their purchase. The fun things are choosing a make, model and color. Options are also exciting. However, there is another decision that is not considered fun to make, but it is very necessary. This decision is securing insurance for the vehicle. The best thing to do is to determine how much the annual insurance premiums will be on a vehicle that you are contemplating purchasing. Annual insurance premiums can range anywhere from what is considered cheap car insurance at slightly over four thousand dollars to over ten thousand dollars.
Let’s take a closer look at this question. Insurance.com has broken up a galaxy of cars into five basic groups: Passenger Cars, Vans/Wagons, Crossovers/SUVs, Sports Cars, and Trucks. Each of these very large groups are then broken into three sub-groups: Large, Midsize and Small.
Here’s how the average annual premium for each of these groups broke out:
Group Highest Premiums Cheapest Premiums
Lg. Crossover/SUV: Mercedes-Benz G-Class $2,088 Hyundai Veracruz $977
Midsize Crossover/SUV: Infiniti EX $1,306 Hyundai Santa Fe $832
Small Crossover/SUV: Mazda Tribute Hybrid $ 1,372 Kia Sportage $840
Lrg. Passenger: Audi S8 $2,071 Pontiac Grand Prix $902
Midsize Passenger: Audi S6 $1,571 Subaru Legacy $962
Small Passenger: Volkswagen Eos $1,198 Kia Rio5 $870
Small Sports Car: Dodge Viper convertible $2,580 Mazda MX-5 Miata $1,017
Lrg. Truck: Cadillac Escalade EXT $1,592 GMC Sierra2500HD $1,013
Midsize Truck: Dodge Dakota $1,279 Ford Expl Sport Trac $1,070
Small Truck: Chevrolet Colorado $1,147 Mazda Truck $957
Lrg. Van/Wagon: BMW 5-Series Sports Wagon $1,153 Chevy Uplander $831
If you are interested in owning the large Mercedes Benz G-Class Sport Utility Vehicle, then get ready to pay over two thousand dollars each year in auto insurance premiums. It happens to be one of the most expensive vehicles listed in the table to insure. Yet, it is not the most expensive. The most expensive vehicle on the list to insure is a sports car. The Dodge Viper Convertible will cost you a considerable $2,580 each year in premiums which is definitely not cheap car insurance.
Believe it or not, the most expensive large and mid size passenger cars to insure are made by Audi. The Audi S8 requires over two thousand dollars per year in insurance premiums to be paid. The smaller Audi 6 has an annual premium rate of a little more than fifteen hundred dollars. Surprisingly, a much larger vehicle, the Cadillac Escalade EXT, has annual insurance premiums that are only slightly more than the Audi S6, which is a much smaller vehicle. This could be considered cheaper car insurance when you think about the vehicle.
You can insure the large BMW 5 Series Sports Wagon for a reasonable rate of $1,153. This vehicle is categorized as part of the Large Van and Wagon Group. Another vehicle from this same group is the Chevy Uplander which actually has the cheapest car insurance premiums of any vehicle on the list at $831 per year.
